Siamsa Tíre, a cultural hub of the southwest, extends its summer programme to offer visitors a wide variety of authentically Irish cultural events and activities. The season includes National Folk Theatre productions, the best of Irish comedy, drama and children’s Theatre Summer camps and activities with much more to be announced in the coming weeks.
This summer, The National Folk Theatre presents two of its’ most recent folk theatre productions ‘Anam’ and ‘An Ghaoth Aniar’. Showcasing collaborations with internationally renowned and Ireland’s leading community performers with contemporary staging, these productions highlight the best of our Irish cultural traditions of music, song and dance while incorporating present-day context for today’s audiences.
For the curious among you, you can go backstage on guided tours with National Folk Theatre cast to learn about the history of the National Folk Theatre which dates back almost 50 years, and you can learn Irish dance skills that date back to the 1700s or learn music and song from the National Folk Theatre repertoire with the Academy masters.
For the best of Irish comedy, you can join Joe Rooney for his Celebration of Fr Ted, enjoy comic theatre with Seamus O’Rourke’s one man show The Ballad of Mossy Flood, and Ireland’s favourite Irishman Abroad Jarlath Regan, in his stand-up comedy show Jarzilla.
For Cruinniú na nÓg 2023, The National Folk Theatre is offering a free series of themed workshops which celebrate Irish folk culture. Children aged 7-12 years will be able to explore and express their imagination through drama, song, dance, creative writing, drumming and arts and crafts. For those who want to dive deeper into the world of theatre, they can join the Siamsa Tíre Theatre Summer Camps in July for more creative fun through dance, song, music and art and learn how a vibrant professional theatre works.
“The last few years have given us an opportunity to engage more with our local and international audiences to see what they want across the seasons. This year’s more diverse summer programming is a direct response to this feedback and research and will provide Irish culture in all its forms, both traditional and modern, right across the summer and all year round,” comments Sean Murphy, Chair of Siamsa Tíre Board.
