Cré – Believing Earth explores folklife traditions surrounding interconnectedness of Irish culture and the natural environment through a range of media from performance-based drawing and photography to poetry and calligraphy.
Kerry-based artist Karen Hendy collaborated with photographer John Minihan, sculptor Holger Lonze, photographer Alex Boyd, the poet Paddy Bushe, and calligrapher Tim O’Neill and worked closely with performers from the National Folk Theatre of Ireland (Jonathan Kelliher, Anne O’Donnell and Joanne Barry).
About the Artist
Karen employs vernacular materials that are present in the Kerry landscape in her own large-scale work, including peat, sand and charcoal that provide the ground for dancers to perform traditional dance on. The work was undertaken in the wetlands of the Iveragh Peninsula and at the National Folk Theatre of Ireland at Siamsa Tíre and was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Creative Ireland, Kerry County Council and Ealaín na Gaeltachta.
