The Dead Letter Office presented by Mary-Lou McCarthy and Once Off Productions

*This live theatre show is open to both the general public and primary school groups.

The Dead Letter Office is an exciting new play for young audiences aged 9+, exploring migration and belonging.

Elizabeth is a dead letter detective and knows everything there is to know about lost post. She loves her job… but people don’t send letters anymore.

Days before the closure of her beloved Dead Letter Office, a mysterious package arrives. Faced with the most difficult mystery of her career, Elizabeth is forced to make life-changing decisions.

Developed by Veronica Coburn and directed by Emily Foran, with an award winning creative team, the play is a beautiful story about connection and how through others we can find ourselves.

Themes and Context

The Dead Letter Office deals with themes of displacement, migration and identity in an innovative way that resonates deeply with audiences aged 9+, giving a heart centred perspective on a pertinent subject. Through its energetic, interactive performance, vibrant stage design, and custom-built olfactory technology developed with DCU, audiences are immersed in the colourful world of Elizabeth’s lost letter archive and Hassan’s distant homeland.

The themes of play have become even more current due to the significant increase in migrants forced to seek refuge on our shores. From our post-show discussions, it became clear that children are being uniquely confronted with these concerns given the arrival of new classmates who have experienced displacement and trauma. It is our hope that this show can provide a prism through which they can consider the subject of migration in analogy with their own lives, just as Elizabeth does.

Having successfully staged two ISL interpreted performances in 2022, we have adapted ISL into the staging of the production with the aim of being inclusive to diverse audience groups.
