Join the Folk Explosion!

Sunset

Almost overnight, the COVID pandemic removed the foundation of Irish folk culture: our every-day social connections among our close-knit communities. Siamsa Tíre wants to reignite connections with a Folk Explosion, an impassioned celebration of folk in all its glorious forms. The Folk Explosion will herald the Summer Solstice, the height of summer and the most powerful moment of potential in the Celtic Calendar when light overwhelms darkness for the longest day of the year and shines in full force.

Roisin McGarr, Executive Director comments, “After what has felt like a year of unrelenting darkness under the shadow of a global pandemic, Siamsa Tíre is inviting artists and groups – local, national and international – to shine in full force and join us in an unfettered joy-fest of bright ideas. We are inviting submissions of folk and folk-inspired project proposals for inclusion in our application to the Arts Council’s newly announced The Grand Stretch | Coiscéim Coiligh. If Siamsa Tíre is unsuccessful in its application, we would still like to keep in touch with applicants.”

Roisin adds, “All artforms are welcome. The Folk Explosion will rejoice in every artistic expression of and response to Irish folk culture. We want to see the old and the new, the quiet and the loud, the tested and the experimental. We will particularly welcome ideas from BAME artists working in Ireland who are exploring Irish folk culture. Siamsa Tíre wants to cherish and celebrate our cultural heritage, elevate our artists, and inspire new explorations and approaches. Above all else, we want to connect.”

To submit your idea for inclusion in THE FOLK EXPLOSION you will need to complete a short submission form and give samples of previous similar work you’ve done. In the submission you will be asked to explain how your idea aligns to Siamsa Tíre’s aims for THE FOLK EXPLOSION and meets the criteria set by The Grand Stretch / Coiscéim Coiligh.
